The decode: what the three-second click is, and why the drive sometimes pulls itself together
The click, translated: that steady, rhythmic tick is the head assembly trying, failing, and re-trying to find its bearings — sweeping out, missing the servo information it needs to orient itself, resetting, sweeping again. Roughly every three seconds: one full lap of hope. It is the sound of a drive that can no longer reliably read its own navigation — through worn heads, a weakening critical area, or both.
The grace period, explained: "reliably" is the operative word. Marginal components drift — with temperature, with position, with luck — and sometimes a retry lands: the drive locks on, declares itself ready, and for a spell behaves almost normally. That was his second attempt. The relapse minutes later completes the signature: this is a drive cycling across its own failure threshold. Each successful window tends to come a little harder than the last; nobody is issued a schedule of how many remain.
