He opened with an apology this archive exists to overrule: "This is a long story, sorry…" The long story was a complete diagnosis waiting to be read. A working 2TB external in an enclosure with extra USB sockets and a cooling fan — bus-powered day to day, no on/off switch, "which has always annoyed me." The reasonable fix: a switched USB hub. The hub didn't work; its documentation suggested power; and then the fateful improvisation — "I found what I thought was the right power cable, connected it to the external HDD and plugged it into a wall socket. The external HDD then went dead." Since that instant: no registration on any PC, the enclosure's fan silent, and the hub dead too. His closing line was checking the cable against the one he'd assumed it matched. The decode below finishes that check for him — and explains why the very suddenness of the death, alarming as it felt, was the case's best omen.

The decode: the lottery in the cable drawer, and the component that dies so the data doesn't

The barrel-jack lottery, named: the round power plugs on consumer electronics are a standard shape concealing a chaos of contents — different voltages, different polarities, identical fit. Every household's cable drawer holds several that will slide perfectly into sockets they were never meant to feed. His "what I thought was the right power cable" is the most ordinary sentence in the electrical-damage genre: the plug fitted, so the plug was assumed correct, and the enclosure received a diet its electronics were never built to survive. No carelessness required — only a drawer, a fit, and an assumption the connector's designers did nothing to prevent.

The instant death, read hopefully: the drive didn't struggle, whine or fade — it simply stopped, everywhere, at once, taking the enclosure's fan and interface with it. That pattern points to the strike landing in the front-line electronics: the enclosure's power handling and, standing behind it, the protection components that live on circuit boards for exactly this day. Such components are designed as sacrifices — they fail hard and fast, absorbing or short-circuiting the assault, so that the delicate machinery behind them never tastes the wrong voltage. Total, instant, silent death is very often the sound of that sacrifice working: the outer layers dead at their posts, the platters and heads behind them untouched and unaware.

The long story, formally thanked: his apology inverted, for the record — the sequence he documented (hub first, its failure, the documentation's prompt, the adapter's source, the instant of death, the hub's parallel demise) let the bench reconstruct the strike's path before a screw turned. The recovery: the sacrificial layers peeled back, the drive simply asked

The enclosure's electronics were assessed and confirmed lost — fan, sockets, bridge, all casualties of the front line. Behind them, the drive's own board showed exactly the hoped-for signature: its protection had fired, absorbing what the enclosure passed through, and once those components were serviced at the bench the mechanism beneath proved entirely healthy — never struck, only silenced. Connected natively and write-blocked, it was imaged in one uneventful pass, and the estate mounted from the copy complete: folders, names, dates, all as they'd been the evening before the wrong cable found its socket.

The outcome

Two terabytes delivered verified on new media — with a written account of the strike's path, the layers it spent itself against, and the innocence of the drive at the end of the chain.
