Her enquiry carried the particular dread of the organised. A primary school teacher with "all my work on a memory pen" — plans, resources, the working life of a classroom — and the accident that stalks every stick left in a laptop or tablet's side port: "it was in the side of my tablet and got bent, and now there is a small crack along the chip and it won't read or pick up." The decode: the lever in the side port, and the fork under the microscope

The physics of the accident: a stick standing proud of a side port is a lever waiting for a load — a knock, a bag, an edge of a desk — with the port as fulcrum and the stick's body as the arm. Tablets and thin laptops make it worse: the port sits at the device's very edge, and the whole assembly travels. Nothing in her account suggests carelessness; the geometry is simply against every full-length stick in every side port, every day, which is why this genre's advice box reads the way it does.

The two anatomies: older and larger sticks are small circuit boards — connector, controller chip, separate memory chip — and bending them usually breaks the connector or board traces, leaving the memory chip untouched and straightforwardly readable once lifted. Modern compact sticks are monoliths: the entire device — memory, controller, wiring — fused into one black slab, which is what "a crack along the chip" almost always announces.
