"I carried on working on it fine for about half an hour": the deceptive grace period after a spill decoded — the rice myth retired, the delay absolved, and the music library recovered from a machine that never woke again

His confession was the useful kind — complete, and unflinching about the advice he'd known and not taken. "I spilled a bit of water on my Mac when the lid was open… some went through the keyboard. Unfortunately I did not turn it off straight away, like many advice sheets tell you to. After wiping the keyboard dry I carried on working on it fine for about half an hour with no issues, and closed the lid. Following this I have been unable to turn it back on." The decode: the grace period, the rice, and the shelf

Why the half hour was the wound: water on electronics does little harm by wetness alone — the damage comes from water plus power, which turns every damp junction into a tiny electrochemical cell, corroding and bridging while current flows. The machine that "works fine" after a spill is not surviving; it is running its own destruction, minute by powered minute, in places no keyboard-wipe reaches. The closed lid was likely the final edge — a sleep transition asking wet circuitry to switch states — but the sentence had been written across the whole half hour.
