His enquiry was a model of the practical kind: the drive is a 2TB SATA Seagate surveillance model from a Swann CCTV system, the recordings are "around 1.5GB in size," he needs video with its audio, and he had two questions — "how much would this cost?" and "do I need to supply a device to copy the recovered data to?" Both get direct answers below. But the shape of his first sentence — "I am wondering if you could recover video files… from a Seagate Surveillance HDD" — suggests he may already have tried the obvious thing and met the standard surprise: connect a CCTV drive to a computer and the computer offers to format it, as though two terabytes of footage weren't there at all. The decode: why the recorder's drive is gibberish to a PC — and where the audio lives

The private filesystem: CCTV recorders don't store footage as tidy folders of video files. They treat the drive as one enormous reel, writing camera streams into their own indexing scheme — a private dialect each recorder brand speaks fluently and ordinary operating systems don't recognise at all. Hence the "unformatted" verdict a computer gives: it isn't reporting damage, it's reporting incomprehension. The result plays on any computer, which is rather the point: footage that needed one specific recorder to be watchable becomes footage that needs nothing special at all.

"How much would this cost?" The honest structure, because the number depends on what assessment finds: the assessment itself is free; it produces one fixed written figure, including VAT, before any chargeable work begins; and the whole job is covered by no recovery, no fee.
