"The recovered video files are unplayable and some photos are of really bad quality": the two classic carver failures decoded — and the holiday reassembled into original, playable footage
His report was precise enough to diagnose from. A GoPro HERO12 Black, a 128GB card, and a five-day trip's videos and photos "formatted in-camera following a holiday." His discipline afterwards was nearly perfect: "I have not written any new data to the card since formatting — except 1 photo." Then the self-rescue attempt, and its two tell-tale results: free recovery tools produced "video files that are unplayable" and "some photos… of really bad quality." He asked for exactly the right thing — "the original video files, preferably in their original playable MP4 format" — and the good news is that his two disappointments are not evidence the originals are gone. They are the two signature ways signature-carving tools fail on action-camera media: broken containers, and thumbnails masquerading as photographs. Both decoded below — and both survivable.

The decode: what the format really cleared — and why the free tools stumbled twice
The format, sized correctly: an in-camera format is fast precisely because it is shallow — it clears the card's index, the table saying which file lives where, and leaves the recorded data itself standing in place. His trip did not burn down; its address book did. Stopping all writing immediately afterwards — one photo aside — preserved that standing data almost perfectly, and the ledger below accounts for the one exception honestly.
Failure one — the unplayable videos: free tools work by carving: scanning for the recognisable opening bytes of a video file and then copying forward on the hope that the rest follows in an unbroken run. Action-camera footage punishes that hope. Long recordings on busy cards are written in interleaved pieces, and a modern video file is not a simple stream but a container whose index of its own contents may sit far from its start. Carve a contiguous slab from a fragmented original and you get a file with a valid name, a plausible size — and internals that no player can make sense of. "Unplayable" is the carver confessing it copied the wrong span, not the card confessing the footage is gone.
Failure two — the "really bad quality" photos: cameras embed small preview thumbnails inside their photographs, and carvers, hunting for image signatures, find those miniatures easily — then present them as recoveries. Blurry, small, disappointing: they are not his photographs degraded; they are his photographs' passport photos, delivered in place of the person. The full-resolution originals want structure-aware work, not signature luck.
The recovery: the card read whole, the footage rebuilt along its own skeleton
The card was imaged in full, write-blocked, and every subsequent step ran on the copy. Remnants of the pre-format filesystem — surviving directory traces and allocation leftovers — gave back original names, timestamps and a first map of where each recording had lived. Where fragmentation broke that map, the reassembly followed the video's own internal structure: each recording's atoms and indexes, chained across the card until every piece of every clip was accounted for, then rebuilt into proper self-contained files. The result was what he asked for in his own words — original, playable footage in its native format — verified the only way that counts for video: played, start, middle and end of every clip, with the photographs recovered at full resolution beside them.
The outcome
The five days delivered playable and whole, names and dates restored where the remnants held them. The honest ledger on his one post-format photo: its small footprint was located and found to have landed on space the format had already released ahead of the trip's data — nothing of the holiday beneath it. Free assessment, one fixed written figure including VAT; on cards and sticks where content has been deleted or overwritten, the figure is payable upfront — and a card retired from front-line duty on principle, its contents now living in more than one place.

Stop writing the moment you notice the mistake; he very nearly aced this and it paid. Then read the two failure modes correctly: "recovered but unplayable" and "recovered but tiny/blurry" are signs the tool carved wrong spans and thumbnails — structural problems, not proof of loss. Don't reformat, don't let any tool "repair" the card in place, and don't judge the originals by a carver's output. The footage's own structure usually survives; it just needs to be followed properly, once, from a full image.
