Their enquiry described a sequence of owner diagnostics so tidy it earns this page's real subject. The patient: a 6TB Seagate SATA drive, "failing to spin and mount — initially you can hear it trying to spin, but then it fails." The observations: visible as a device in Disk Utility, which "pops up asking for the disc to be initialised" — an offer they declined. The decode: the ladder drawn, the prompt declined, the abort explained

The permitted ladder, rung by rung: owners may safely try, in ascending order — a different cable; a different port; a different host machine; and, yes, removing a drive from its external casing to try it bare in a dock or on a direct connection. That last rung surprises people, so let the distinction be formal: the casing is packaging — a plastic shell and a bridge board around a sealed unit — and opening it is reversible, non-invasive, and often genuinely diagnostic, exactly as it was here, where the dock test eliminated the enclosure from suspicion entirely.
