His enquiry arrived pre-consulted, which always sharpens a case. A Seagate Expansion 2TB: "it was dropped whilst playing music files from the storage device, and now it is not recognised by a computer. The light comes on, and a repeated buzzing/beeping noise happens." The prior opinion: "an IT expert advised me that the motor is probably damaged, and the disk is not starting up / spinning." The decode: two suspects, one sound — and why the drop's timing votes for the heads

The shared symptom, honestly stated: from outside the sealed chamber, a dead spindle motor and heads seized to the platter present identically: power light, no spin-up, and a rhythmic buzz or beep — which is, in both cases, the motor pulsing against a rotor it cannot turn. The expert heard exactly what the bench would hear, and "the disk is not starting up" was simply true. The differential lives one level deeper: is the rotor blocked because the motor itself has failed — bearing seized, windings gone — or because the heads are gripping the platter surface, pinning a perfectly healthy motor from the outside? Same sound, opposite treatments: a truly dead spindle points toward the heaviest interventions in this trade, up to and including moving platters to a donor chassis; seized heads want the far gentler service of a proper lift under the laminar flow bench.
