The decode: the arithmetic of full, the two icons, and the diagnostics that told the truth unhelpfully
What "disk almost full" is actually warning about: the warning reads like housekeeping nagging; it's closer to a structural alarm. A modern Mac's storage and operating system require free space to function — not as luxury but as working room: the system writes constantly (caches, swap as memory fills, filesystem metadata, the copy-on-write bookkeeping modern Mac volumes do for every change), and all of it needs somewhere to land. Run the disk to the brim and those writes start failing mid-operation — the system trying to update its own structures and finding no room to complete the update. That's how a full disk breaks things: not wear, but interrupted bookkeeping — structures left half-written because the write had nowhere to finish — accumulating until the volume can't sustain the system, and the machine falls over exactly as his did: a shutdown out of nowhere that was actually weeks in the arithmetic. The warnings weren't nagging; they were the countdown.
The two icons, read as a pair: individually, this archive has decoded both: the question-mark folder means "no startup disk found"; the no-entry sign means "I found a system but cannot use it." Alternating between them across restarts is itself diagnostic: the storage is marginal — presenting on some boots (far enough to be found, too damaged to boot: no-entry) and failing to present on others (question mark). A drive flickering in and out of visibility is a drive whose condition, not just whose contents, now needs treating — consistent with Disk Utility's blank stare in Recovery, and the signal to stop the restart experiments entirely: each boot is another demand on storage that's answering only intermittently.
Why "no problems" was true and useless: his exasperation at Apple Diagnostics deserves its vindication. Hardware diagnostics test components — memory, sensors, controllers responding to test patterns — and can pass a machine whose filesystem is wreckage, because content-level damage isn't a component fault. "No problems" meant "the parts I test answered"; it said nothing about the half-written structures a full disk leaves behind, and nothing about storage that presents only intermittently. It's the same category confusion as a car passing an electrics check while out of fuel: true, and beside the point. The honest reading of his whole script: every tool he ran was asking the wrong layer.

Have the storage accessed directly and imaged on first response. And take the countdown seriously next time: a modern system needs free space to write its own records — keep a healthy margin, always, and the warnings never reach the arithmetic's end.
