Spin-up, a few seconds of hope, spin-down: the cycle decoded as hardware, not corruption — and why the politest button on the dialog was the most dangerous thing on his desk
His account was compact and complete. A WD Passport 4TB with "a lot of important data on it"; on connection, "I can hear the disk spinning for a few seconds and then the disk stops"; the Mac responds with its standard verdict — "The disk you attached was not readable by this computer" — and its three buttons: eject, ignore, or initialise. The indicator light stays on throughout. His reading: "I assume the device is corrupt." His action: none — he pressed nothing destructive and waited for a quote, twice underlining that the data really did need recovering. The waiting was wiser than he may have known, on two counts. First, the diagnosis: a drive that spins up and then stops is not describing corruption — corrupt data sits on a drive that keeps happily spinning. Spin-then-stop is the mechanism itself giving up on its own start-up. Second, the buttons: two of the three were harmless, and the third — the helpful-sounding Initialise — is the single most efficient way a worried owner can convert a recoverable drive into a damaged one.

The decode: what spin-then-stop means, and what Initialise would have done
The cycle, translated: a hard drive's start-up is an exam it sets itself. Spin the platters to speed; fly the heads; then read its own critical service information to establish who it is and how it's arranged. Pass, and it reports ready. Fail — because the heads are weakening, or the critical area they must read is degrading — and a well-behaved drive does exactly what his did: stands down and spins to a stop rather than flailing. The few seconds of spinning were the exam being sat; the stop was the fail being declared. The steady light merely says the enclosure has power — the porch light again, glowing over a house that couldn't answer. And this is why "corrupt" was the wrong word in the kindest way: corruption is a software wound on working hardware. His was hardware declining to serve — a distinction that decides everything about safe treatment, because software remedies aimed at a hardware fault only add injuries.
The three buttons, ranked: Eject — safe. Ignore — safe. Initialise — the trap dressed as housekeeping. Initialising "prepares a disk for use" by writing fresh, empty structures onto it: precisely the operation you must never aim at a drive whose existing structures are the thing you're trying to save, and doubly cruel on a mechanism already struggling, which now gets asked to write in its weakest condition. The dialog cannot know the disk is full of a life's important data; it offers the button to everyone. Declining it was the case's quiet victory.
The recovery: treated as hardware, because it was
Out of its enclosure and onto native connections, the drive told the fuller story: one head weakening, the start-up exam failing at the critical read. It was conditioned and taken to hardware imagers for a head-aware harvest — the healthy heads' territory captured first at full pace, the weak head's regions coaxed patiently with adjusted handling, the drive rested whenever its behaviour asked. The image completed; and on the copy, the filesystem proved exactly as intact as the decode predicted — no corruption at all, merely a volume that had been waiting behind a failing doorman. Everything mounted, everything listed, everything came across.
The outcome
The Passport's full estate — the important data he'd twice underlined — delivered verified on new media. Free assessment, one fixed written figure including VAT, no recovery, no fee; the quote he'd been waiting on arrived with the diagnosis attached, so he knew not just the price but the truth. The drive itself was retired: a mechanism that fails its own morning exam has given fair notice.
Drive spins briefly, stops, and the system offers to initialise
Never press initialise on a drive that holds anything you want — it writes blank structures over the ones you're hoping to save. Eject or ignore, then disconnect and stop retrying: each start-up attempt runs the failing exam again on weakening hardware. Read the signature correctly — spin-then-stop is the mechanism standing down, not files misbehaving — so resist the urge to run repair or recovery software against it; software cannot mend a head. The safe path is native access, patient imaging, and every conclusion drawn from the copy.
