And then the system's offer: "my laptop prompted to fix the hard drive, which I clicked okay." Since that click: "every time I plug it in, to any laptop, it crashes Windows Explorer and won't let me into it." His closing line carried the stakes — "it's got a lot of important data on it and I'm hoping it can be saved!" It could. But this page's real work is the decode, delivered without a syllable of blame, because the click he made is the click the dialog is designed to receive: on a drive that has just made a mechanical sound, "fix" means "write" — and writing was the one thing that wounded mechanism should never have been asked to do.

The decode: the scrape, the paradox, and what "fix" actually does

The crashes that followed are the fingerprint: Explorer now attempts to enumerate a volume whose reads stall and whose bookkeeping was edited under duress, and gives up mid-list, every time, on every machine. The trap is systemic, not personal; this archive records it so the next reader hesitates where he couldn't have known to.
