Every so often an enquiry describes a fault so precisely that the diagnosis is essentially enclosed. A Seagate 2TB portable drive, and his two-stage observation: initially, "the light was coming on and the drive was beeping every few seconds." Later: "the platters would spin and it sounded like the head was trying to move — but it would then beep and the head would return to its start position. This would repeat continuously." He tested it properly — Mac and Windows, via USB and via SATA: symptoms identical — and a lengthy call with the manufacturer ended with their view that "the problem was power-based." A college lecturer, he asked for everything by email — honoured throughout. The decode: the ritual, the failing step, and the phone-line boundary

The startup ritual, stage by stage: every hard drive performs the same liturgy at power-on, and his description maps onto it exactly. Stage one: the motor spins the platters to speed — which his later observation confirms succeeding: "the platters would spin." Stage two: the heads leave their parking place and perform their calibration seeks — sweeping to find the drive's servo tracks and firmware areas, the mechanism learning where it is. Stage three, if calibration succeeds: the drive reports ready. His drive never reaches stage three: the head "tries to move" (stage two beginning), fails to find what it seeks, beeps or protests, and "returns to its start position" — the retract that drives perform when a seek fails — before trying again, continuously. That loop — spin, seek, fail, retract, repeat — is the signature of a mechanism whose motor is healthy and whose heads can no longer read what they must find: weakened or failed heads, or damage in the regions they calibrate against. His earlier "beeping every few seconds" was likely the same story a stage earlier in the drive's decline. It is, respectfully, about as far from a power fault as a symptom can be: power faults produce silence or failure to spin — not a motor at full speed and a head making disciplined, failing attempts.

His dual test, banked: trying the drive across two operating systems and two physical interfaces was the elimination a bench would otherwise run: identical symptoms over USB and native SATA acquit the enclosure's bridge electronics entirely, and two hosts acquit the computers. The fault travels with the mechanism — established, by him, before the enquiry was sent.

The phone verdict, corrected with respect: no criticism attaches to the manufacturer's support line for reaching a different conclusion: phone triage works from a verbal description, cannot hear the drive, cannot measure it, and sensibly steers toward the benign explanations first — power being the classic. But a diagnosis made from a description is only as strong as the description's transmission, and his own written version contains the refutation: spinning platters are proof of delivered power. The boundary this illustrates is worth stating kindly: phone support triages; it cannot diagnose a mechanism. His ears did better — and the bench's instruments simply confirmed them.

Stop the power-ups now: every cycle is the mechanism rehearsing its failure over the platters holding your only copy. Don't swap enclosures or try more interfaces if you've already matched symptoms across two — that elimination is done. Write down exactly what you heard and when; a staged description like this case's is genuinely diagnostic. Then let the seek succeed the only place it can: after head service under filtered air, once, into an image.
