The decode: reading the loop, and why the ear points at the wrong part
What the loop is: a hard drive's start-up is a sequence — spin up to speed, load the heads, read the servo and system information, present itself as ready. A "loop" is that sequence failing partway and restarting: the drive spins up, tries to establish itself, hits a wall, resets, and begins again — a repeating cycle of the same sounds, never resolving into a working drive. His "stuck in a loop" captures it exactly: the drive is trying and re-trying the same failed start-up.
Why the ear says motor but the fault is usually heads: the repeating cycle prominently features the spindle spinning up each time, so the natural description is "the motor" — it's the most audible part of the loop. But the motor is usually doing its job fine; it spins up on every cycle, which is exactly what it's supposed to do. What's failing — and causing the restart — is almost always further along: the heads unable to read the servo information needed to complete initialisation, so the drive gives up and re-attempts. The loop is the symptom of a read failure, not a spin failure. (Genuine spindle problems do exist — a motor that can't reach speed, or a seized bearing — and diagnostics distinguish them; but a drive that clearly spins up and loops is far more often a head fault than a motor fault.) The owner's ear pointed at the loudest component; the diagnosis looks at the one that's actually failing.
Why a looping drive must be stopped: a drive stuck in a start-up loop is repeatedly loading and attempting to use heads that can't read — and every cycle drags those heads across the platter surface again.
