The decode: what a wipe leaves behind, and why speed matters
Why a wipe usually leaves more than you'd fear: "wiped the files" sounds total, but in practice most such actions — deleting files, clearing folders, even a quick format as part of troubleshooting — remove the references to the data far more than the data itself. The files' catalogue entries are cleared and their space marked reusable, but the actual photo and letter data typically remains written on the drive, intact and recoverable, until new writes land on top of it. So his photos and letters are, in all likelihood, still substantially present on the Dell's drive — not catalogued, but there. (The exception is a deliberate secure wipe that overwrites every sector, which a troubleshooting engineer correcting an unrelated issue would have no reason to run; an ordinary delete or format is far more likely, and far more recoverable.)
Why acting quickly matters — the practical part: here's what determines his outcome. Recoverability after a wipe is a race against overwriting. Every time the wiped machine is used — booted, updated, have new files saved to it — the operating system writes to the drive, and each write risks landing on the space his old photos and letters occupy. The more the machine is used after the wipe, the more gets overwritten and the less comes back. So the single most useful thing he can do is stop using the machine and get it assessed promptly — ideally power it down and not boot it again until it's in a lab. The files are likely there now; the goal is to reach them before continued use claims them.
