The decode: why dash cam cards fail, and why the footage survives
The punishing lifecycle: a dash cam card endures conditions no ordinary card faces. It records continuously whenever the vehicle is running, and — because storage is finite — it works on a loop, constantly overwriting the oldest footage with new. This means the same memory cells are written, erased, and rewritten over and over, endlessly, for the life of the card. Flash memory has a finite number of write/erase cycles per cell, and a dash cam burns through them at a rate a phone or camera never approaches: a card that might last years of casual photography can be cycled to exhaustion in months of continuous dash cam duty. On top of the write cycling, dash cams sit on windscreens in heat — parked cars reach high temperatures, and heat accelerates flash wear and stresses the controller. Continuous writing + constant overwriting + heat is a recipe for early failure, which is exactly why dash cam cards fail more than most, and why his "just stopped working" is a common dash cam story.
What actually failed: the wear typically manifests as either a controller failure (the card's manager gives out, so the card stops being recognised or reports errors) or NAND wear (memory cells degrading past the point of reliable reading).
