The ladder: rung by rung
Rung one — the connection itself: the trivial causes are eliminated first, because they're free and occasionally the answer: the port, the extension lead, the hub. A stick that's "not recognised" through a failing front-panel port or a tired hub is a non-case — tested in moments on known-good connections. It's the route of last resort only in the sense of being reached last; it's routine work, and it's why even a stick whose controller is entirely dead is very rarely a lost cause. The data lives on the memory, and the memory can always be asked directly.
Why the order matters: the ladder's discipline is economic as much as technical — each rung is cheaper and gentler than the one above, so climbing in order means the recovery never does chip-level work on a stick whose fault was a cracked solder joint, and never wastes attempts on connections when the controller is plainly gone.
