Out of its casing and still unreadable: why a MyCloud's drive speaks Linux — the helper's dead end decoded as a language barrier, not a loss, and the volume reconstructed the way the appliance built it

His enquiry described a reasonable plan hitting an invisible wall. A WD MyCloud network drive that failed; then: "I have had someone look at it, and they've removed the hard drive from the casing — but they can't access the data on it." His question: can this be helped? Yes — and the decode is genuinely reassuring, because the wall the helper hit was very likely not the data at all. A MyCloud may look like an external drive with a network cable, but inside it is a tiny Linux computer, and it formats its disk the way Linux servers do: in a Linux filesystem, arranged in the appliance's own volume layout — a structure that Windows and Mac machines cannot read natively, healthy or not. Connect a perfectly intact MyCloud drive to a PC and you'll see exactly what the helper saw: a disk that's present, and contents that won't open. The decode: the language barrier, and the two separate questions

Why the drive won't read on a normal computer: a MyCloud is an appliance — a small Linux system whose job is serving files over the network — and its internal drive is formatted for that system's use, not for direct connection. Two layers stand between a PC and the files. The filesystem itself is a Linux format, which Windows doesn't understand at all and macOS barely; and beneath it, the appliance arranges the disk in its own volume structure — system partitions, managed data volumes — that a consumer machine can't assemble even before the filesystem question arises. So the helper's experience was exactly what an intact MyCloud drive produces on a PC: visible as hardware, illegible as contents. Their dead end was a language barrier, not a diagnosis — and their removal of the drive, done cleanly, cost nothing and helpfully got the patient out of a dead appliance.

The two questions his case actually contains: untangling them is the diagnosis. Question one: why did the MyCloud fail? — was it the appliance (its power, its board, its tiny computer dying), which is common and leaves the drive perfectly healthy, or the drive itself? Question two: can the data be read regardless? — and here the language barrier cuts the encouraging way: since even a healthy MyCloud drive is unreadable on a PC, the helper's failure to access it tells us nothing negative about the data. If the appliance died, the drive is likely fine and needs only proper interpretation; if the drive itself has a fault, the standard recovery discipline applies first and the interpretation follows. Either way the road is the same: assess the drive, image it, and reconstruct the appliance's volume on the image — reading it in its own language rather than expecting it to speak the PC's.

On the bench

The drive was assessed first on the Atola Insight Forensic — settling question one: whether the failure had been the appliance's or the drive's, and what condition the mechanism was actually in — then imaged write-blocked on the Atola TaskForce 2, with the drive handled per its diagnosis. Pulled the drive from a failed NAS and your computer can't read it

Don't take the unreadability as a loss — it's a language barrier. NAS units are small Linux systems, and their drives carry Linux filesystems inside the appliance's own volume layout, which Windows and Mac can't assemble or read even when the drive is perfectly healthy. So a PC's blank stare tells you nothing about your data. Two cautions: don't let the computer "initialise" or format the disk when it offers (that offer destroys the very structures a recovery reads), and don't install Linux-reader utilities and experiment on the only copy — appliance volumes are more than a bare filesystem, and half-right tools can write where they shouldn't. Have it imaged and reconstructed in its own language; the failure was usually the appliance, and the data usually never left.
