Her account traced a pattern this archive meets often enough to name. A WD My Book Studio external "got knocked and fell onto the floor. The decode: the delay, the swap, and the two-personality drive
Why it worked, then died: the day-after death is one of the crueller patterns in drive failure, and it has a mechanical logic. An impact doesn't always break heads outright — it can leave them marginally damaged: microscopically deformed, their flight over the platters degraded but momentarily survivable. Such a drive passes its first test — powers up, mounts, reads — while its wounded heads fly badly, wearing against tolerances they no longer meet. Then, hours or a session later, the margin runs out: the damage progresses to failure, and the clicking begins — the heads no longer finding their bearings at all. The first day's success wasn't a reprieve; it was the damage still in progress. It's why this archive's standing advice after any drop is counterintuitive: a drive that seems fine post-fall should be backed up immediately and retired from trust — because "fine" and "failing on a delay" look identical on day one.
The board swap, assessed fairly: her partner's test deserves the credit of precision. What he replaced was the external bridge board — the interface electronics in the enclosure, outside the sealed drive — and he explicitly did not open the drive itself. As home interventions go, that's the contained end of the spectrum: enclosure electronics are a legitimate household-level suspect, the swap is reversible, and the sealed mechanism was never exposed.
