The decode: the right tool for a different disease
What First Aid actually is: Disk Utility's First Aid is a filesystem repair tool — it checks the volume's bookkeeping (the catalogue, the directory structures, the allocation records) for logical inconsistencies and mends what it finds. For its actual patient — a volume whose structures have been tangled by an interrupted write or a software mishap on a healthy drive — it's a perfectly respectable first response, and this archive has no quarrel with it. But its entire world is the bookkeeping. It assumes the hardware beneath is sound, because it has no way to treat hardware at all: it cannot service a head, steady a mechanism, or read a platter the heads can't reach. First Aid mends maps. It cannot mend the machine that reads them.
Why a fall is precisely what it can't treat: a desk-height drop onto hardwood is a mechanical event — as this volume's drop cases detail, the impact's risk runs from jarred components to disturbed heads to head-platter contact. Her drive's symptoms fit the pattern exactly: it "still turns on" because the electronics and motor survived (they usually do — drops rarely kill the power side), but it doesn't mount because the reading side — heads over platters, the delicate part — took the hit.
