Her enquiry told the story the way it happened, breathless and honest. A Toshiba 1TB external, eight years old, holding "photographs, Excel spreadsheets, Word documents" — and holding them, crucially, as the sole copy, because she was mid-move: "I was swapping computers. I took it all off one, put it on here — I was gonna upload it tomorrow." She left it plugged in, was called away for the day, and came back to a message she reported as best she could: "it now states that the drive perimeter is in." Anyone who has met it will recognise the original behind her version — Windows' terse, famously unhelpful "The parameter is incorrect." A former colleague in IT told her the disc was probably corrupt and to find a specialist — sound advice, credited. What was on it made the stakes plain: "my wedding pictures, and pictures of my mum and dad who have passed away, and all my stuff for work as a consultant." The error is decoded below without a syllable of condescension about the wording — hers was closer than most — and the timing, not the drive, stands trial as the real villain.

The decode: what the parameter error actually means — and why "tomorrow" was the villain
The message, translated: "The parameter is incorrect" is Windows announcing that it asked the drive for its volume structures — the boot record and master index that say what filesystem this is and where everything lives — and got back answers that don't parse. It is a librarian's error, not a library one: the index card is scrambled; the books are very likely still shelved. Her IT acquaintance's reading — corrupt, see a specialist — was exactly right, and his refusal to guess further did her a service.
How a drive corrupts while nobody touches it: plugged-in and idle is not the same as inert. Systems housekeep — updating records, flushing caches — and a power wobble, an unstable connection, or an interruption mid-housekeeping can leave a critical structure half-written. On an eight-year-old but lightly-used external, that logical stumble is far more probable than mechanical failure — though age means the mechanism gets checked before anything else is believed. Hers checked out sound: the fault lived entirely in the bookkeeping.
The timing, named honestly: the fault was ordinary; the exposure was not. For one night, everything existed in exactly one place — the definition of the migration window, the hour when a carrier drive briefly becomes sole custodian of a life. "I was gonna upload it tomorrow" is this genre's most repeated sentence, and never once as a confession of negligence: she had a plan, a good one, and the window simply closed a day early. The recovery: imaged first, the bookkeeping rebuilt where mistakes are free
The drive was imaged write-blocked before anything interpretive was attempted — with the parameter error, the cardinal sin is accepting the system's follow-up offers to format or "repair" the disk in place. On the image, the damaged structures were reconstructed: the volume's boot information restored from its surviving backup copies, the master index repaired where the interrupted write had torn it. The volume then mounted from the image exactly as she'd last seen it — folders, names, dates — and the estate came across in full. Verification honoured what the contents were: the wedding photographs and the pictures of her parents were opened and seen, not merely counted; the spreadsheets and documents sampled and confirmed live.

Everything delivered on new media — and the migration finished properly at last: her planned upload went ahead from the recovered copy, so that "tomorrow" finally arrived, one drive later than intended. Stop at the message. Decline every offer to format or repair the disk — those write, and writing is how a librarian's error becomes a library fire. Don't reinstall drivers or swap cables endlessly on a sole copy; note the error and have the structures rebuilt from an image, where mistakes cost nothing. And treat migrations with the respect the window deserves: the copy onto the carrier isn't the backup — the copy off it is. Until both exist, nothing has been backed up at all.
