The decode: unbundling the slash

Two services, two goals: the distinction is worth stating cleanly because the trade often blurs it. A repair promises you the same drive back, working — the goal is the hardware's future. A recovery promises you the data back on media you can trust — the goal is the contents' future, and the original drive is retired with honours once it has given them up. They overlap in technique (both may involve opening the drive, servicing the mechanism) but not in destination — and confusing the destinations is how people end up reusing a drive that should never have been trusted again.
